FINAL RESULTS
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Im about a week away from my own personal quarter-life crisis. In the time
since I graduated
college, Ive been stuck in an awkward professional limbo: not old or wise
enough to be taken
seriously and not young or immature enough to blame my mistakes on ignorance or
inexperience. Ive
been forced to somehow balance my desire to stay up until 3 AM watching reruns
of Arrested Development with my drive to succeed in a professional capacity,
which requires significantly more than two and a half hours of continuous sleep
to maintain any semblance of proficiency. But here I am about to turn
twenty-six and cross through some imaginary threshold where I suddenly become a
full-blown adult and put away childish things. This is depressing, not only
because of the implication that Im aging and disproving my own hubristic
claims of immortality (even though my birthday is on Easter Sunday this year),
but also because I seemingly must leave a part of myself in the past albeit
the brazen and immature part, but still.
Today, I sat bobbing in the committee boat pondering my fate as a developed
member of society, sinking deeper into a state of melancholic dejection, when I
suddenly found myself in a fit of laughter as I witnessed 8 boats converge at
the leeward mark into a chaotic jumble of luffing mains and fierce cries for
room, only to exit the turn in a choreographed rounding of precision and grace.
All of my thoughts about aging and responsibility and time-weighted societal
constraints floated away and left me with a feeling of comfortable euphoria. I
was uplifted by the realization that no matter how old I become Ill still be a
sailor, and I will always have the desire to point my bow to the east and reach
my way through six-foot rollers and salty blasts of Atlantic spray or just as
easily point by bow westward and float into the warm pastels of the horizon at
dusk. My youth, in essence, is not tied to an arbitrary count of earthly
revolutions about the sun but is instead defined !
by my own ability to laugh and smile, neither of which should be hard to do as
long as I still have the means to raise my sails and harness the breeze.
Wind: 0 to 8 knots from the NNW, shifting to the South for the final race.
Weather: Sunshine, 50 to 60 degrees.
Races: Triangle-Windward-Leeward, combined divisions.
