RAMS-LIONS Big Apple
Classic
HOSTS: Columbia & Fordham
Universities
October 18-19,
2008
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
While enjoying the spectacular October weather on Saturday; gazing at the
George Washington, Whitestone & Throgs Neck Bridges with the Empire State
Building and the Manhattan skyline in the distance; noting the expansive body
of
water in Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay and observing the proximity of
the
race course to the spectator piers at Morris Yacht & Beach Club, Fordham
junior Carl Shorett said, "This must be one of the most beautiful venues in
College
Sailing." Sunday was more of the same.
After a fall of predominately light air sailing, Saturday provided winds from
the northeast at 16-19 with gusts to 22 mph in the morning. Conditions
decreased in the afternoon with the winds blowing 11-16 with occasional higher
gusts, which allowed eight A Division and six B Division races to be sailed. On
Sunday, the goal was to complete a full rotation for the nine teams
participating. Again, strong winds prevailed from the north at 15-19 with gusts
to 21 as B
Division completed two races. A Division then went out for one race as the
winds picked up to a steady 20-22. When B Division arrived at the starting
line,
according to the new wind indicator on the Race Committee boat, the winds had
increased to a steady 22-25 with the peak gust hitting 27. With one boat
capsized; another swamped and the others surviving more than sailing, the Race
Committee sent the boats to the beach and the regatta was called at the end of
Race 8B.
Two Breakdowns were filed. One was allowed and the other disallowed. There
were no protests.
Hamilton & Rutgers were No-shows.
We would like to thank John Good, Fordham '58, for providing his 45' Hunter
to serve as Race Committee boat and the many sailors from both Fordham &
Columbia, who did yeoman's work in the safety boats on both days and who
provided
our guests with the World's Best Bagels & Cream Cheese both days; delicious
clam
chowder and Italian bread on Saturday and sensational NYC Cheesecake
"To--die-for" at the conclusion of the regatta on Sunday.
Sixteen races were sailed; eight in each division.
