Conditions could not have been better for the 2009 ICSA/APS Team
Racing National Championship! Winds in clipper cove blew from the
west at 5-18 knts with flat water and little current.
The regatta format begins with the 14 teams split into two flights
of seven boats. Each flight races a single round robin with the top
4 going on to the gold fleet and the other three to the silver
fleet. The gold fleet races one abbreviated round robin where
scores from matches with other gold fleet teams are carried forward
from the first round of sailing and one full round robin while the
silver fleet raced a single round robin. The top four teams then
race a final-four round robin to determine the winner.
Conditions on Friday were sunny with a west wind at 15-18 knts and
some higher gusts near the end of the afternoon. Competition in
group 2 was tough with a three way tie between SUNY Maritime,
Stanford and University of South Florida for two slots to the gold
fleet. We raced 3 consecutive sail-off round robins for a total of
8 races before the tie was broken and SUNY and Stanford advanced to
gold. Racing concluded for the day at 6:30pm.
Saturday brought a thicker marine layer making conditions chilly.
Winds were 8-10 knts for most of the day picking up to 15 as the fog
cleared and the sun came out around 3pm. The second gold round
robin was started in the afternoon and completed to race 18. Two
requests for redress were granted, one resulting in calling off a
race immediately after the start and the other race (between
Georgetown and Yale) was re-sailed the next morning.
Sunday was again foggy and cold with winds on the lighter side at
5-10 knts from the west. Gold round 2 was completed at about
11:30am and the final four was determined with no ties. Final four
racing began at about noon and concluded as the sun came out at
about 1:15pm. Congratulations to the Boston College Eagles for
winning the 2009 ICSA/APS Team Racing National Championship!
