MCSA Sloop Championship
                         Detroit Yacht Club

                         September 19-20, 2009

                            2:29 PM 9-20-09

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

Saturday: Sailors were greeted with an east wind of about 5-8 on the Detroit
River with a current of about 2.5 running with the wind. PRO Ed Theisen set a
windward-leeward course twice around. Minnesota retired after suffering a
broken main halyard and Miami took a Yellow flag for a rules violation in the
first race. Although the fleet soon learned the tactic of dip starting in the
current, Purdue was hailed as OCS in Race 3. The wind was quite steady
indirection and strength during the day until race 8 which was as started at
6:17 pm. As the Sun started to settle in the west, the wind strength decreased
making it hard to beat against the current. The race finished with a few
minutes left on the 45 minute time limit just in time to get the boats put away
before dark.

Toledo started with a win in race one and added four first place finishes
during the day to be 18 points up on a pack of team headed by Northwestern.
Second place in the standings was occupied by Illinois, Miami, Marquette, and
Northwestern during the day. Michigan and Wisconsin also were close to second
in the standings making for a very competitive regatta for second place and a
berth to the ICSA Sloop Championship.

Sunday: The first race was a windward-leeward once around due to the low
pressure of about 5 from the east. The wind picked up for the remaining 4
races permitting the course to be lengthened to twice around. Racing was
completed about 2 p.m.

Toledo continued their winning ways with three more bullets in the five races.
Second place was still up for grabs with Wisconsin, Michigan and Northwestern
all taking turns at holding this spot in the standings. Bowling Green had a
couple of good races and threatened to join the group challenging for second
place. Marquette dropped in the standings when there skipper became ill an
they had to leave the event giving them DNS scores for all five of the last
races.

It was a clinic put on by Toledo that was the highlight of the event. Skipper
Ryan Lashaway credited the good showing to having sailed in the US Singlehanded
Championship in late July at the Detroit Yacht Club and the Rolex Clinic from
that event which dealt with sailing in current. He also credited the practice
that the team had done in Flying Scots as an important part in their victory.
