HIGHLIGHTS
Saturday: After a two hour wait for wind, the westerly filled and racing
started with a steady 10 knot breeze and increasing flood. The name of
the game was holding a lane off the starting line on a race to short
tack the beach. The wind peaked at 15-17 knots and glorious sunshine
ruled the afternoon, although temperatures never rose above 52 degrees.
The final A-set was sailed in a early ebb; A-division complete 6 races,
B-division completed 4 races. Race length averaged 19 minutes. One
protest was filed resulting in a DSQ.

Sunday: All the boats were capsizing, and the skies were grey;
California dreaming, on such a winter's day. A late winter storm made
its way into the region in the early morning hours. The wind blew from
the bizarre southerly direction making for an offshore wind which was
shifty, puffy and unpredictable. To further complicate matters, a
moderate cross current ran on the lower half of the course (but not the
upper part which was protected by the break wall and shoreline). The
windward mark was tucked very close to shore because the wind was much
stronger (and potentially too strong) further offshore. Winds peaked in
the mid-twenties in gusty squalls, but were generally in the 10-15
range. No protests were filed.

Special thanks to Event Chair Mark Adams and his RC team (Kevin
Sullivan, Peter Dennis, Rusty Morgan, Mike Kalin) the Stanford coaches
(John Vandemoer and Frank Ustach) and undergrads (there were many) who
also volunteered for Race Committee). Also thanks to judges Vicki
Sodaro, Katie Maxim, Dana Sack and Don Wieneke.
