Google is set to release the next major version of Android by the end of
this year. Sticking with their sweets-inspired codenames, this one will be
dubbed Gingerbread.

Clearly, if they want to release it this year, Google engineers are already
hard at work on Android
3.0<http://www.unwiredview.com/2010/07/02/revisiting-android-3gingerbread-details-post-some-corrections-clarifications/>.
However, no one outside of Google should have access to this version so
early in the development cycle.

That said, make of this picture what you will.

This may be legitimate. It may be a test phone inside Google. It might be a
Google engineer’s phone. It may even be that somehow, someone outside Google
managed to get their hands on a phone running Gingerbread for a few minutes
and snapped this photo.

Or it could be a well made Photoshop fake.

And while this picture could be fake, the fact that testing on Android 3 has
started is corroborated by
evidence<http://www.greenecomputing.com/2010/07/13/android-2-2-leads/>from
Greene Computing, makers of popular Android benchmark tool Linpack.
They’ve seen usage from ROMs designated to be Android 3.0, Android 3.0.1 and
Android 3.2.

However true or not these claims along with the above picture are, a few
things are clear: the next version of Android is on its way, and Google is
working on it.

Back in the real world, Android 2.2
Froyo<http://www.unwiredview.com/2010/05/20/google-announces-android-2-2-froyo-says-it-has-the-worlds-fastest-mobile-browser/>has
yet to launch for any other device apart from the Nexus One, so
perhaps
that’s a more immediate concern.

We might even find that some phones will skip 2.2 altogether and jump right
to 3… or so we wish.
