NEW YORK — T-Mobile has announced that a device based on Google Inc.'s Android software will be its first phone to take advantage of a new high-speed upgrade to its mobile network. T-Mobile USA, the fourth biggest U.S. mobile service, said it would provide more details about the new G2 phone in coming weeks. The device will be the first to support HSPA plus, which T-Mobile USA has made available in 50 metropolitan markets with more than 85 million inhabitants. T-Mobile did not say which manufacturer would make the G2. HTC Corp built the first Android phone G1, which T-Mobile started selling nearly two years ago. Android has been gaining ground against popular phones such as the Apple iPhone as many phone makers are choosing Android software for their most advanced devices. AT&T, the exclusive U.S. provider for iPhone, also plans to upgrade its network to HSPA plus, but has not announced phones to support the higher speed technology. In the United States, Smartphones running Android were the top sellers in the second quarter.
