Dear Verizon: Please get your software act together so Android phones can be
tethered to laptops to be used as wireless cards.

That plea comes after weeks of wanting a Droid (probably a Nexus One now),
but having to refrain from a phone upgrade because Verizon, Android and
laptop tethering don’t mix.

Verizon has a mobile broadband access plan that for $30 on top of your data
plan makes your smartphone double as a wireless modem. Given the way I use
my phone that lack of tethering is a deal breaker for my anticipated move to
an Android phone.

Without tethering, I’m sticking with the BlackBerry Storm. I’ve inquired
about tethering and Verizon’s response has been that it’s coming—in early
2010 or at some point in the future. When Sam Diaz asked the Google folks at
the Nexus One launch
<http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=29089&tag=wrapper;col1>about tethering
he was told that it would come at some indefinite point in
the future.

I’ve added up the costs of the voice, data and mobile broadband plans and
getting a wireless card and a phone just doesn’t make financial sense. In
addition, Sam’s test—he’s playing with both a Droid and a Nexus One—proved
that applications such as PDAnet, an application that allows for tethering,
were unreliable.
The solution: Verizon and the Android gang need to line up their drivers and
get the tethering going. A few of us are tired of waiting
