Evernote, a Web service that makes it easy to store and remember
online bits of data like text, pictures and video, is getting major
endorsement from Japan’s biggest mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo.

Earlier this week at a press event in Tokyo, DoCoMo announced that all
of its Android phones and tablets would come bundled with Evernote,
and that those who buy one of the phones during the next year will be
able to upgrade to the premium version of Evernote for free. This is
the first such deal with a major carrier for Evernote, which will
generate some revenue for the company and help it expand its user
base. But the company is certainly hoping it won’t be the last.

The deal generated some positive press for DoCoMo as well, as Evernote
has taken off in Japan. Japan is the second-largest country for the
service, behind the U.S., making up 20% of the company’s 5 million
users, says Evernote chief Phil Libin. Pretty impressive for a company
that does little advertising, relying mainly on word of mouth.

Evernote also said that it is developing an application for DoCoMo’s
i-mode mobile internet service, a platform for the carrier’s feature
phones. The key here, says Libin, is for Evernote to develop an
expertise in creating apps for feature phones, rather than just the
smartphones and tablets the service is currently on, to reach a
broader base of consumers. “Our next 100 million users are going to
have to come from much more mainstream segments, the kinds of people
that buy feature phones right now,” Libin says.

It’s still nowhere close to 100 million users, but the company has
been growing by leaps and bounds since it launched in June 2008, and
just recently passed the 5 million user mark. It now adds about 12,000
users a day.

The startup has a fairly simple “freemium” business model. The basic
service is free, but users who want the bells and whistles pay a fee.
Libin, who is refreshingly open about sharing figures, says Evernote
currently has around 100,000 premium users. At $5 per month (there’s
also a $45 a year plan), Evernote’s currently making upwards of half a
million dollars in revenue a month.

Worth pointing out is that DoCoMo’s venture capital arm, DoCoMo
Capital, is an investor in the company. Evernote recently raised a
third round of funding with $20 million from Sequoi Capital, bringing
its total funding to $45.5 million.
