By now, you’ve probably heard about the Motorola Xoom and all of its
incredible specs. You’ve also probably heard that it will be running
on Google’s new Android Honeycomb, and that it was crowned best
tablet, and best gadget at CES 2011. What you probably didn’t know is
that the Motorola Xoom also includes a physical barometer!
That’s right, in addition to the accelerometer, magnetometer, ambient
light sensor, gyroscope, there’s also a barometer! Now why in the
world would Motorola include a barometer in the Xoom? Well, for one,
Google’s Android OS, starting with 2.3 (Gingerbread) and 3.0
(Honeycomb), have built in support for hardware barometers.
Nobody knows exactly why it was included in the Xoom, or for what
purpose it will serve, but people have been speculating. The number
one possible reason for the barometer support in Android 2.3 and 3.0
might be related to Google’s mission statement:
"To organize the world‘s information and make it universally
accessible and useful"
The information they would be organizing and making universally
accessible and useful in this case would be weather information. By
giving their Android OS barometer support (and assuming that hardware
manufacturers include barometers in their devices) Google will
essentially be able to collect atmospheric pressure data from millions
of users, which could possibly lead to better weather prediction and
analysis.
Another possible use of the barometer would be to automatically put
mobile devices in airplane mode when traveling. The pilots will no
longer need to get on their loudspeaker to tell us to turn off our
phones and the FAA will have one less thing to worry about.
These are all speculations, of course. We will will all find out for
sure when an official at Google or Motorola decides to tell us. Until
then, it’s nice to imagine :-)
