*So what stands 10bit for? Usually you have three color channels (red, yellow, blue), where your video is stored with 8 bits depth per color. So you can have a total of 256 (2^8) different shades of each primary color or a total of 16.8 million shades. Using 10bit-depth you get 1024 (2^10) each or over a billion in total that can be displayed if (and that's the point here) your hardware is able to display 10bit-encoded videos. There are some modern LCD and Plasma TVs that are capable of displaying 10-bit depth content, also players with “xvYCC” or “xv.Color” on the box can handle it so far, but it is no secret that the industry is hesitating to implement it so far, so best solution so far for watching the new 10bit-anime-content is your pc. (That said, just don't watch videos per PS3. This is a game console, no matter what they label it for sales reason. If you don't want to watch on PC then go buy a good3D-Player and that is not a PS3!). Now what's the point in using 10 bit, if even many grafic devices on pc are only up to 24 bits per pixel? Actually there are quite many LCD displays that can only show up to a bit depth of 6 bits per channel. These ones use something called "dithering" to simulate a depth of 8 bits per color by quickly changing to nearest colors in a dynamic pattern, so you get the impression of a higher color accuracy (for more info take a look at Dither: Digital photography and image processing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dither>). Following that it would be actually possible to use this technique to get the illusion of 10bit-color-depth, but there is the big disadvantage of a very high bitrate (and thus higher filesize) to keep the dithering intact. So the advantages of 10bit-encodes lie in more efficiency: * - *The bit-depth increase provides greater accuracy for the miscellaneous prediction processes involved in the AVC/H.264 compression scheme, including motion compensation, intra prediction and in-loop filtering. * - *Extensive experimentation demonstrates that the coding efficiency gains are highest with videos that contain shallow textures and low noise. * - *Since gains are provided through increased accuracy of internal computations, improvements can also be observed on 8-bit video sources. Interestingly, the reduction of artifacts provided by 10-bit processing does not require a 10-bit display. It’s perceivable even on standard LCD panels (8-bit or dithered 6-bit).* Kelebihannya *You'll get either * - *remarkable smaller filesize at same or slightly better videoquality or * - *little smaller filesize at better quality or * - *same filesize but extremly better quality and * - *no reencodes of 10bit-releases to 8bit or even avi, since the appropriate routines of scalers lack for the moment.
