Iya, paling gampang analoginya seperti ini. Dulu di masa-masa awal android, aplikasi seperti GMail, GMaps, Google Search masih masuk ke dalam OS android. Jadi kalau kita mau pakai Gmail versi terbaru kita harus upgrade android juga. Tapi kalau sekarang Aplikasi-aplikasi itu kita bisa update tanpa harus mengupdate android. Tapi tetap saja saat ini kalau ada hal2 baru di OS android kita tetap upgrade OS androidnya kan?
Nah sekarang ini menggunakan pola yg sama tapi lebih sedikit abstrak di mata user. Kalau dulu kelihatan apps2 yg sudah terpisah dari OS. Kalau sekarang services di bawahnya yg terpisah. Misalnya google services yg support gmap, google search, calendar,dll. Google single sign-on services, google game services. Umumnya services-services in penggunaannya berhadapan langsung dengan user, jadi kalau servicesnya di update, user dapat langsung menikmati perubahan/penambahan fitur ini tanpa harus mengupdate Android OS-nya.
