Philips Xenium W8510 4.7″ Android phone promises 35 days of standby, 14
hours of Web browsing time

The main problem with smartphones nowadays is battery life. Sure, quad-core
or octa-core CPUs, loads of RAM, fat internal disks are all nice – but at
the end of the day, does your phone actually last until the end of the day?
If not, then you’ve got a battery life problem, like so many out there.
This could easily be remedied by phone makers by putting bigger batteries
inside their devices, but that doesn’t always happen – and the excuses are
many. Either for shaving off a few mm of thickness, or simply to save some
money, most handsets still come with batteries that are too small for
full-day use.
That doesn’t seem to be the case for the Philips Xenium W8510. This
Android-powered smartphone claims it’s able to last around 35 days on
standby, a whopping 18 hours of talk time over 3G, and a rather incredible
14-hour Web browsing time over Wi-Fi.

This is achieved thanks to a 3,300 mAh battery, that’s fitted inside what
is otherwise an upper-midrange smartphone coming with a 4.7-inch 720p HD
touchscreen.
CNMO doesn’t have details about any other specs for the Xenium W8510, but
Philips’ recent efforts in the smartphone space have all centered around
long-lasting batteries, so this is just a continuation of that focus. We
just wish that more manufacturers would take a cue from Philips and simply
make more room for batteries inside their devices.
That said, obviously Philips is on and on about how it optimized both
hardware and software to get to the aforementioned battery life numbers,
but between us – that’s probably something like 95% hardware (read: the
size of the battery), and 5% software. Bigger is better (in batteries, if
not everything else). Everybody needs to learn this.
One interesting aspect of the Philips Xenium W8510 is its fast charging
ability. If you charge it from empty for just 10 minutes, it will then last
20 hours in standby or go through 2 hours of calling without issue. After a
30 minute charge, it will last 57 hours in standby, or you’ll be able to
call for 6 hours before the battery is low again. That’s some sweet tech
right there, and once again we hope to see this in other companies’ devices
as soon as possible.
