The Android 4.4 KitKat update schedule is varied for many devices. Android 4.4 KitKat and it's features were officially announced in a surprise Halloween announcement on October 31 alongside the Nexus 5. The Nexus devices andGoogle Play Edition devices will be among the first to get the new OS update while other devices by Samsung, LG and Sony may take longer. Here the Android 4.4 KitKat update schedule for the devices that we know about.

Nexus Devices

The Nexus 5 ships with Android 4.4 KitKat so as soon as you have the newGoogle device in your hands you should be able to use the OS update. Of course for some users that may be later than for others, Google has warned users to expect weeks' worth of delay for the Nexus 5, "Order processing for Nexus 5 devices may take a little longer than usual, up to several weeks. If you ordered a Nexus 5 device, go to 'My orders' and click Info for the most up-to-date order status."

Google has made clear that other Nexus devices like the Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), and Nexus 10 (2012) would be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update in "the coming weeks". We anticipate that owners of the more recent Nexus devices like the Nexus 7 (2013) could see the Android 4.4 KitKat update as soon as this week, particularly since the time frame given for the Google Play Store devices is 15 days.

The disappointing news in the Nexus department was that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus would not be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update and that Google would be abandoning support for it after providing it with the standard 18 months' worth of updates. This was both surprising and disappointing news because Google had touted the fact that Android 4.4 KitKat could run on devices with specs as low as 512MB RAM. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus with 1GB of RAM could certainly have run Android 4.4 KitKat if this was true. It's surprising that Google declined to demonstrate this with one of their own Nexus devices.

Fortunately for users of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus there is strong support in the Android developer community. Owners of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus who want to go beyond Android 4.3 JellyBean now have a ROM that will allow them to run Android 4.4 KitKat. Meanwhile the Sprint Galaxy Nexus got Android 4.3 JellyBean last week.

Samsung Devices

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition is expected to be one of the earliest Samsung devices to get the Android 4.4 KitKat update. HTC has boasted that the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be rolling out for the HTC One Google Play Edition within 15 days so we would be surprised if the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition didn't get the OS update in the same time frame.

There aren't any specific time frame or details for other Samsung devices but Samsung has many flagships that it continues to provide support for. We expect to see Android 4.4 KitKat roll out to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition and the Samsung Galaxy S4. Samsung is currently in the midst of rolling out the Android 4.3 JellyBean update to the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. Those are all the devices that will also get Samsung Galaxy Gear support.

Generally Samsung has been pretty good when it comes to OS updates so we can expect a fairly good chunk of the Samsung lineup to get Android 4.4 KitKat. According to IBTimes, based off the leak of the Samsung Galaxy Knox the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be coming to all of the aforementioned Samsung devices as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

HTC Devices

The first HTC device to the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be the HTC One Google Play Edition which HTC claims will get the new OS update in 15 days. HTC says this will be followed by the HTC One which will get the Android 4.4 KitKat update in 90 days. The owners of the HTC One Google Play Editions can rest more easily, apparently the OS update is on the way for them. Android Community reached out to HTC and asked them about their planned update schedule for the HTC One which will come with Sense 5.5. HTC responded:

Keep in mind, this is only for EMEA countries (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). HTC tells Android Community they'll release Android 4.4 on the One in those countries "from the end of January", with the GPE device seeing it earlier. If you have a GPE One, the update will come much sooner than 2014, too. HTC says they'll start updating that device "starting from the end of November". Good news for those who have the Nexus-y flagship from HTC.

It is not clear if the recently released HTC One Mini and the massive HTC One Max will also get the Android 4.4 KitKat update. HTC only said, "Details regarding the HTC One Max and One mini will follow." HTC hasn't been great with providing OS update support to their devices and the Android 4.3 JellyBean update was marred by persistent delays. Many users have good reason for doubting that HTC will follow through on its promises. IBTimes speculates that the HTC Droid DNA, Butterfly, J, and possibly the HTC One X+ all have the chance to get Android 4.4 KitKat. We suspect they are being over optimistic.

Motorola Devices:

Motorola didn't give a timeframe for the Android 4.4 KitKat update but confirmed that the Moto X and the new Droids would all certainly get the new OS update. That's pretty much what we expected since Motorola had been teasing the Android 4.4 KitKat update since before it was even officially released with the Nexus 5. Motorola owners should be comforted by the fact that it is a Google company. In terms of specific devices Motorola said that the Moto X, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini would all be getting Android 4.4 KitKat for all carriers and the developer editions. There's also that new Moto G device so can expect that to either have or get Android 4.4 KitKat when it launches.

LG Devices

When it comes to LG, the LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been confirmed. We would be shocked if it wasn't, the LG G2 is the model the Nexus 5 was built on after all. LG hasn't confirmed the date for the LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat update but they did say the Nexus 4 would receive the update in a few weeks. Other possible LG devices that see the update could be a good chunk of the LG Optimus line and the LG G Pad 8.3. IBTimes specifically speculates that these devices include the LG Optimus L7, L5, L3 and the LG Optimus G, LG Optimus G Pro along with the LG Optimus Vu series.

Sony Devices:

Update:

We're pleased to tell you that we'll start rolling Android 4.3 for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR,Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month*.

We also mentioned that a few of our products would be jumping software version - so, we can confirm that Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V* will be upgraded to Android Jelly Bean 4.3... also from next month.

Sony hasn't officially announced which of it's devices will be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update. It's posts on it's Twitter account weren't particularly informative though they did make clear that Sony devices would be getting the new OS update: "re. #Android@KitKat, we're excited- next week our news on 4.3, 4.4; products and more," wrote the company. SonyXperiaGB, the company's official Twitter account in the U.K. revealed in the thread that the devices that will be updated to Android 4.4 are "still under development." Among those we would naturally expect the Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and probably the Sony Xperia Z to get the Android 4.4 KitKat update. In addition to them IB times suggests that the Sony Xperia ZR, ZL, the Xperia Tablet Z, the Xperia Tablet S and the Xperia SP as possibilities.

Huawi, ZTE, Acer

Among the lesser known companies known more for their entry level devices we probably shouldn't anticipate too much Android 4.4 KitKat support. The Huawei Ascend P2 and Ascend P6 are the two devices with the potential for the OS update, though Android 4.4 KitKat has the possibility of supporting devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. With ZTE the Blade V and Blade 3 could both be supported. With Acer the main area we might see Android 4.4 KitKat support is in the Acer Liquid S1 and the Iconia A1 tablet.
