So according to Engadget (and this screenshot they received above),
Froyo will have built in Wifi tethering! This is great news, BUT you
must keep in mind that the chances of the carriers here in the US
allowing this feature on their Android phones is VERY slim. So while the
unbranded version of Android Froyo will have this feature any phone you
buy from a carrier with Froyo on it will most likely have this removed.
Now, even with it removed, it is still good news for carrier bound Froyo
phones. The reason is that you have to root your phone to get wifi
tethering as it is right now, so that won’t change. BUT since their will
be an official Froyo wifi tethering system, it’ll be much easier to
install on rooted phones. Developers can easily make custom ROMs with
the official WiFi tethering installed and you can just flash it onto
your carrier branded phone without having to change kernels etc (in theory).
Can’t wait for Google I/O and the Froyo features list, how about you?
