AT&T will debut the first Dell tablet later this summer, the Mini 5,
or “Streak”, according to statements made by Dell CEO Michael Dell.

Speaking at the Citrix Synergy conference, Dell indicated the device
will first launch in Europe under a partnership with O2 Telefonica,
with the device debuting on US soil with Dallas-based AT&T in “late
summer.”

The size of the Streak, think Playstation’s PSP, does not make it a
direct competitor to Apple’s iPad, which, like the Streak will,
utilizes the 3G network of AT&T.

The Streak features a 5 inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera on the
rear of the device, a front facing camera that can take pictures and
capture video, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and a
Qualcomm Snapdragon 1-GHz processor, the same processor featured in
Google’s Nexus One and several other mobile devices.

Dell’s device will run on Google’s latest version of the Android
operating system, and if Dell’s hopes for the device come to fruition,
will feature a SIM card option, allowing users to make phone calls
using the Streak.

The potential ability to make phone calls is what sets the Dell device
apart from the Apple iPad and may position the Streak as the first
true competition for those who are not in the market for the iPad,
champion Google’s Android OS, and/or are looking for true mobility by
combining smartphone capabilities with a tablet computing device. The
question which lingers however is, how much will the device from Dell
cost? At this point no announcement has been made.

extremely viable alternative to the iPad and if so, what features do
