Berkeley Software Design Operating System to Run Linux
                        Applications
Meets Linux market need for a reliable, commercially
             supported Internet Server platform

Colorado Springs, CO (December 14, 1998) - Berkeley Software
Design, Inc. (BSDI) announced today that it is adding Linux
application support to its BSD/OS operating system.

This new BSDI Linux Application Platform (LAP) functionality
will be included in an upcoming release of the popular BSDI
Internet Super Server software product. LAP addresses the
biggest barrier to widespread industry adoption of Linux
applications -- the lack of a reliable, commercially
supported operating system to run them on. BSDI's LAP also
expands the market opportunity for Linux application
software vendors at thousands of corporations, Internet
Service Providers and network appliance developers worldwide
where BSDI is used.

Andrew Fredrick of Walter W Fredrick Associates Inc. says,
"Our ISP told us to switch from our old Linux server to
BSDI's Internet Super Server for the reliability, security
and support that BSDI offered. Now that BSDI will have the
Linux Application Platform, it is really the best of both
worlds."

BSDI Brings Reliable OS Platform to Linux Applications

The BSDI OS has demonstrated continuous uptimes of more than
2 years under heavy load conditions. And BSDI technical
support and product quality is recognized as top-tier in the
industry, with a guaranteed four-hour response and support
escalation directly to development engineers. BSDI embraces
open industry standards and aggressively licenses source
code and development tools. This level of reliability,
technical support and compatibility means that the vast
majority of Linux applications will run flawlessly on BSDI
platforms.

Brendan Reilly of Software Editing Corporation, says, "Our
clients want to run Oracle applications and Netscape servers
on an open industry standard platform. We investigated the
various Linux OS platforms in the market, but our clients
are concerned about the communal nature of Linux OS
technical support, and the lack of a commercial license to
run Java applications. With this announcement, their needs
will be met -- they can run the applications they want on a
reliable and well-supported OS platform, with source code
available. Clients will trust their business to this
approach."

"The BSDI Linux Application Platform meets customer needs.
It combines the best elements of the Linux market --
innovative applications, low cost, source code, and industry
standards -- with the great technical support, reliability,
and blazing OS performance of BSDI," said Mike Karels,
BSDI's Vice President of Engineering.

BSDI Grows the Market for Linux Applications

Because of its rock-solid reliability, bullet-proof
security, superior technical support, robust feature set and
attractive pricing, the BSDI operating system is a favorite
among Internet Service Providers.

Open, industry standards-based software like BSDI is gaining
a major presence in the industry - a presence which is
predicted to grow compared with closed proprietary systems.
In a publicly disclosed internal memo (see
http://www.opensource.org/halloween.html), a Microsoft Corp.
official warned the company's upper management that the open
standards-based development process could threaten
Microsoft's revenues and its relationships with customers -
especially software developers and highly sophisticated
computer users.

Industry observers agree that the BSDI Linux Application
Platform is a real win for the industry. "This announcement
is a huge opportunity for Independent Software Vendors to
leverage their Linux developments into a large market of
loyal BSDI customers, that being the ISP community," said
Greg Howard of Infonetics Research. "And the ability to run
Linux applications can only enhance BSDI's position with
ISPs and make their platform even more attractive to
corporations and developers".

Open Beta Program Registration

BSDI will ship open beta software of the new Linux
application platform in the beginning of the first quarter
1999. Customers can obtain more information and register for
the open beta program at http://www.bsdi.com/LAP/signup
