SuSE 6.0 - The next distribution?
by Panders & Octane

Ars recommendations

Panders' take:
As a modestly experienced Linux user, I found SuSE to be as easy to install
and
configure as any distribution I've used. I would not necessarily proclaim it
superior to every other distribution in all cases. However, the mix of
GUI-based install utilities and the amazingly abundant collection of
applications is impressive. Red Hat is still a favorite of the masses and it's
hard to pass up. Nevertheless, if I had a friend looking to install Linux for
the first time, using a modem for Internet connectivity, and wanting a
truckload of packages, I would have a hard time not suggesting SuSE to that
person.

As a PC enthusiast, I am enamored with the idea of the Linux OS making steps
towards becoming a viable desktop OS alternative. The back-room server fame is
impressive to me, but the biggest challenge for Linux in my mind is making it
to the level of popularity and usability of Windows 95/98.Stability jokes
aside, MS is winning the 'King of the Hill' game thus far on the desktop.
Still, the strides various Linux distribution makers like SuSE are making to
close the gap rapidly are quite a pleasure to observe. As with BeOS, an admirer
can only hope support falls in line and software makers continue to jump on
board.

Octane's take:
As a Linux user since '94, I tend to take all of the distribution hype with an
enormous grain of salt. However, when I sat down with SuSE, I was pleasantly
surprised for a change. While it isn't doing anything necessarily spectacular,
what it is doing is done well and done without a lot of broken code or, at
present, a need to download a ton of updates. SuSE also managed to provide a
good mix of tools for the Linux novice to keep his system functioning once the
initial installation is complete. Aside from an abundance of applications, the
aforementioned tools are one of the most important aspects of any Linux
distribution. SuSE has managed to put together a very well-rounded
distribution
that keeps a good balance of tools for both the novice and the expert. After
spending a few weeks with SuSE, it is easy to see why it has developed such a
strong following elsewhere. In fact, it's my distribution of choice for the
time being, leaving my Red Hat CDs to collect dust or act as impromptu
coasters.
