December 28, 2006 -- We have received some insider info on the status of damaged submarine cables and the progress made so far. RNAL (Hong Kong Isolation): The RNAL cable paths between Busan and TongFuk & Hong Kong - Toucheng Taiwan are still down, this has caused Hong Kong to be isolated from the RNAL cable. The recovery ship is attempting to get emergency authorization so it can depart in next 12 hours to commence repairs. APCN System 1: Due to the multi cables faults in the region it is experiencing great difficulty in restoring the traffic via other cable facilities. APCN System 2 Segment B5: This cable is still down resulting in the Taiwan node being isolated. SMW3 S1.8: SMW3 Segment is still down and recovery vessels have been requested. APCN2 Segment 7 (Tanshui - Shantou) & Segment 3 (Hong Kong - ChongMing): Vessel CS Retriever will be mobilized for the repair of APCN2 S3 & S7 China-US segment W3 (Shantou - ChongMing) & Segment S1 (Shantou - Okinawa/SLO): The Cable is still down, no further information available at this moment. FLAG FEA Sub-System 8 (Hong Kong - Shanghai - Korea): The FLAG cable system is currently mobilizing a recovery vessel. >From the looks of it, its going to be a colder and lonelier Christmas for many geeks out there this season.
