What exactly is > so difficult about allowing UTF-8 in those protocols too? there is a lot of embedded systems out there that would crash-and-burn if they received a reply in utf8. There are also a lot of of protocols that expect name parts to be in 7bit ASCII, SMTP and SNMP come to mind, the latter being one that is often found in embedded systems running critical network infractstructure. -rick
