Do you have any real examples of this happening? What did the user type?
What software was involved?

Later you claim that there are ``probably some transcoders still in use
that cannot produce good names.'' If you had any real examples, why
would you say ``probably''? I think you're just spreading FUD.

Have you been paying any attention to Bruce's messages? His point is
that these problems are _not_ unique to domain names. Half-width kana
don't work when users are typing their login names, for example.
