Dan, going directly to 8-bit IDNs has always been a non-starter for many applications. no matter what this group says, applications protocol standards (or implementations) are not going to universally embrace UTF-8 as soon as IDNs are approved. the only real question is, will there be a single ASCII format for IDNs, or will each application develop its own? trying to force applications to use UTF-8 serving no purpose other than to delay deployment of IDNs.
