What about combining these two thoughts, and displaying the Punycode in a tooltip (or elsewhere) when the user hovers over the domain name? I realize that doesn't solve the problem for people who are *expecting* a URL with non-ASCII characters, but it's a start. It could be implemented immediately in any IDN-aware browser, with no architectural changes anywhere.
