I, as many other IDRISI users, praise the outstanding value for money that
IDRISI offers and the great merits that have made IDRISI one of the most
popular programs for GIS education and research.

What I query is the current direction that Clark Labs is taking. Applying
the principle of allocation, the offer of new products that essentially
duplicate others already in the market only weakens the development of IDRISI.

My wish list include better printing capabilities, and/or better filters
for export and import. For example, CorelDraw was reccomended in the DOS
version, but is not mentioned in the Windows release. Commercial graphics
programs have the common denominator of being extremely powerful,
relativelly unexpensive (compared to GIS programs), and able to filter
almost any bitmap/vector (for example the many dialects of tiff). Why not
provide filters to these? How difficult will be to produce a patch to
export a bitmap with superimposed vectors to such a program?

I use Corel for scanning maps, cleaning the image of unwanted features or
colours, creating land-use/vegetation polygons, and then exporting it to
IDRISI for analysis. I even use Corel for geographical correction of aerial
photographs that do not have information on camera focal lenght or altitude
of the plane.
After processing the image in IDRISI, and getting the quantitative data
needed, I take it back to Corel to highlight features, add fonts, legends,
etc. and have a top presentation product.

Amazingly, some of these tasks were easier with the DOS version than with
the new Windows.
