We are in the same boat as Peter (Leicester, UK) & Bruce (Ottowa).
Alas, I would think most academic institutions face the same problem
with regard upgrading their many seats (30, 40, 50+) of Idrisi. I have
just been refused funding to upgrade our GIS lab to V3, so I will
continue to use V1 for teaching (warts and all). It is worth noting that
in the UK, Idrisi is up against CHEST who can offer GIS software (like
ArcView/Info) to education at very discounted prices on a site licence
basis with free upgrades. Now Idrisi appears to have a large academic
following, maybe we (UK HE) should be seeking to get a CHEST agreement
in place for Idrisi. The alternative is to use alternative CHEST
software, which does not benefit our work load, the learning curve for
beginners or the Idrisi project.
Maybe one alternative would be a "lab kit" from Idrisi which reflects
the size of teaching labs in HE and the funding HE has available.
However, it must be appreciated that Idrisi already represents good
value for money in many respects.
