Hi

I has been using IDRISI a part of my academic career for some year and had
hoped, that the new IDRISI32 supported ESRI ASCII grid import and export.
This format is the common exchange format in my region and is very common
when you are working with DHM and interpolation in general. It's also an
easy way to convert Mapinfo data to raster if you has Vertical Mapper or to
convert ArcInfo or to convert ArcView files if you got spatial analyst.

It didn't, even though it would have been very simple (only the header is
different from GRASS and the calculation is simple as it's descirbed at
http://www.hpcc.nectec.or.th/grass/faq/arcgrid.header.html).

The inclusion of GSTAT could have been a solution, but the version that is
included with IDRISI32 did not support conversion.

I have used the original GSTAT to perform the conversion to/from ESRI ASCII
GRIDs and to/from IDRISI 2 for windows grid.

The syntax is simple

gstat -execute conversion conversion_to_type from_file to_file

where the conversion_to_type could bee;

a for esri ascii grid
b for idrisi 2 for windows binary
c for PCRaster/csf
e for er-mapper
f for esri gridfloat ( a rare esri binary grid)
i for idrisi 2 for windows ascii

This worked fine with IDRISI 2 for windows even though, there was an small
error in the doc file (the row with row parameter is only 10 char, where it
should bee 14), but I could still open the file without manual editing.

This small error is not ignored in the new conversion tool from IDRISI 2 for
windows to the new IDRISI32 format and I has to edit a lot of files and it's
quite annoying.

Is there anybody of you Idrisi/C/C++ guru's who has modified the original
GSTAT to work with the new IDRISI32 format or has got the Clark modified
version to do conversion ???

PS this is not a critic of the new GSTAT interface which is a important step
forward.

PPS there is an error in the MIF (Mapinfo interchange format, which contains
vector data) import because IDRISI32 think it's a raster format and aborts
the import. That makes the Vertical Mapper to ESRI ASCII grid to IDRISI the
best solution at the moment
