Hello Craig,
The first places you will want to check for meteorological data sets
are:
Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) Distributed
Meteorological Database:
This Japanese web server was established under the concept of the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) and provides direct access to real
meta data sets comprising: El Nino climatological monitoring; past
cyclone tracking data; global warming data sets; and monthly reports on
climate systems.
URL: http://ddb.kishou.go.jp/index.html>
Global monthly temperature and global monthly precipitation data sets
are available to download directly via file transfer protocol (ftp)
from the following links:
URL: http://ddb.kishou.go.jp/pub/Climate/Temperature/
http://ddb.kishou.go.jp/pub/Climate/Precipitation/
The World Meteorological Organization provides some tremendous resources
towards linking researchers to all climatological datasets, at:

I hope this helps you out...
