Hello

At present, I am using Idrisi32 to try and determine the coverage urban
(built-up) area in the Maltese Islands using Landsat 5 images (bands). I
want to make a classification of three main signatures; built-up urban land,
other land and sea water. Using MAXLIKE, in Idrisi, I managed to obtain the
image1.bmp attached to this email.

Maltese buildings are constructed from limestone, which is a type rock that
is also found in other parts of the islands especially on barren land
situated in regions close to the coast (e.g. garigue habitat). In fact from
image 1 was noticed that barren coastal strips of the land as well as other
areas with limestone surroundings ( e.g. quarries) cannot be distinguished
from build-up areas.

In order to solve this problem, I tried to select these pixels as part of
the signature 'other land' and the result obtained was image2.bmp
(attached). This had a negative effect on the whole image resulting in an
overall decrease in effective and confirmed urban areas in other parts of
the island.

As a result, I have to find another solution to eliminate or decrease these
'edge effects'. Does Idrisi or any other method offer a solution for the
problem mentioned above? I would be grateful if you could help me in this
issue.

Thanks in advance

Neville Micallef
