--- Start of Idrisi List message In response to Dr. Carvacho's concerns I though it would be appropriate to clarify the situation regarding Windows 2000. A Power User under Windows 2000 is essentially the same as an ordinary user under Windows NT4. Microsoft has implemented a number of new security measures with Windows 2000. As a consequence, any application written with a language compiler that is not Windows 2000 compliant is considered to be a "legacy application" that does not implement some of these new security features. IDRISI32 is written in a combination of Delphi, C++ Builder and Microsoft Visual C++ . All versions of our compilers were released before Windows 2000. Thus they produce, by Microsoft's definition, legacy applications. Only Power Users and Administrators can run legacy applications under Windows 2000. Hence the problem you have experienced. This is not something special to IDRISI -- it will affect ANY program written with a compiler produced earlier than the release of Windows 2000. You may be interested to know that Borland (the company that produces the main compiler we use -- Delphi -- has only just released (within the past two weeks!) Delphi 6 which is Windows 2000 compliant. We will be converting all of our code when the tools are available. We find this situation as frustrating as you. What we are all experiencing here is a hiccup in the Windows development path. Windows is a constanly changing platform and we do all that we can to keep up with it. Until we have all the tools we need to compile a complete Windows 2000-compliant system, the best we can do is warn users and provide a workaround. When users order on CD, a READ ME FIRST page is included with the shipment that gives specific information about this and the solution. Similarly, the trial version download page on our web site indicates the same information. I hope this information is helpful.
