As I'm writing up slides to present at the M3AAWG meeting next week, it is seeming clear to me that a good term for different "i=" copies of the message is "version".
So the message at i=2 is the second version of the message, the message at i=5 is the 5th version. The delta algorithm allows recreating previous versions of the message. Etc.
