Greetings fellow gamers!
UCD GameSoc's annual convention, Vaticon begins but 7 days hence.
Vaticon takes place in the student centre on UCD's Belfield campus, which
should take you only twenty minutes to get to from Dublin city centre.
Admission to the con is 5 for a day ticket and 8 for the weekend. So, now
that we've got logistics out of the way this is why it's worth the effort:
On Friday the 4th we'll be running an overnight Team Fortress 2 and Call of
Duty 4 LAN. It'll cost 25 for the night and will come with free caffeine
and entry to the Saturday of the con. It'll take place in Game The World on
Grafton Street and many other games will be available if there's interest.
We remain the only games convention in Ireland to run a rubber sword LRP
event. This year it's got a pirate theme and as usual will take place in
our very own on-campus woodland. All players will be instructed in the safe
use of the rubber weapons before play.
We have a dedicated video games section to our con this year which will
feature X-Box 360s, Nintendo Wiis and many previous generation consoles. We
will be running over the course of the weekend a Halo 3 tournament and a Pro
Evo Soccer tournament. There will also be Guitar Hero and a Super Smash
Brothers Tournament.
Naturally our convention will have plenty of space dedicated to boardgaming
and a bountiful library of games available for play. We will also be running
Carcasonne and Apples to Apples tournaments.
Card games will be well represented with VS, Magic the Gathering and
Battletech all making an appearance. There will be drafts, melees and
tournaments running.
On the wargames front organised events will be running for Warhammer (40k
and Fantasy), Warmachine and Battletech. There will also be tables available
for casual play.
Vaticon will feature 8 RPGs, 5 LARPs and The Trilogy. Our games have been
carefully chosen for quality and variety to ensure maximum enjoyment for all
our players. The Trilogy is a favoured staple of Vaticon, a day long game
played in three parts and three systems.
Apart from the above we are also running a number of special events at
Vaticon, including:
The InnQuizition: A good clean table quiz for the boys and girls attending
Vaticon XVI - none of your funny business. Hosted this year by the Sisters
of (Very Little) Mercy after the retirement of Fathers Franey and Handjob
(may the good Lord have mercy on their souls), the quiz will take place on
the evening of Saturday April 5th at UCD's Centre Club, 12 euro per table.
Time to get out your Lives of the Saints and brush up on the Seven Deadly
Sins!
Nerf-Assassins: Just incase you feel you're not nervous enough at Vaticon
you can sign up for a game that make everyone a potential assassin or
target. Using rules specifically thought up for the con setting. Oh, and the
games library will have Nerf-Guns.
Giant Twister: Like normal Twister only squared!
UCD Zombie Apocalypse: A home-brewed and hand-crafted game of
Zombie-Survival. Take on the roles of the Vaticon committee (in miniature)
and see how long you can last when the UCD campus becomes infested with a
deadly Zombie horde (It's the commerce students you'll really have to look
out for).
