Hi folks,

As most of ye may know, every year on the Sunday night of Gaelcon, we
hold a charity auction, with proceeds going to Irish children's
charities. In the past, thanks to the generosity of Irish (and
visiting!) gamers, we've donated to C.A.R.I., the Jack and Jill
Foundation, Barretstown, DEBRA Ireland, Crumlin and Temple St
Hospitals, and others.

This year - we'd like to change things slightly.

Why? Well, to an extent, we've become victims of our own success.
The auction started small, and over the years its gotten bigger and
bigger - in no small part due to the efforts of auctioneer
extraordinaire, Colm Lundberg. But what's been happening is that each
year, in general, bids on many items rapidly increase to the extent
that a lot of people are simply priced out of things straight away.

After many years service, Colm is stepping down as auctioneer this
time around, and so we're going to use the opportunity to try
something just a teeny bit different.

Previously, the way things worked is that in advance of the auction,
we (Colm and the IGA) would hear of one or two lots by word of mouth -
but over the course of the weekend, lots would appear one by one until
suddenly we had fifty or so. Colm would work his mojo and sort
everything into a running order, and by Sunday night, we'd have an
auction ready. And with one thing and another, with lots appearing as
a complete surprise to most con-goers, many people got priced out of
bidding or found they'd spent €200 on a rubber chicken they didn't
really need, but now that there's a rubber brick up for auction that
they do really want, they can't afford it...

So this year, what we'd like you to do is let us know in advance if
you have something for the auction. You can do so by mailing me, at
charity at gaelcon dot com. What we'd like is the name of the item,
and a brief description. If you could include a photo too - that'd be
cool. What will we do with this? We'll make a catalogue! It'll be
available on www.gaelcon.com, and we'll have a few hardcopies at the
IGA stand all weekend at Gaelcon. It'll even have a running order!
Obviously, it'll be subject to change (partly because not everyone
will see this mail/post, and items will still randomly turn up - and
partly because we may still keep a few items back to surprise ye
with). Hopefully, this will also allow people to plan their night
better - ye can see what items ye might be interested in, and budget
and bid accordingly.
