hi,
sorry for the flakiness of the server in the past couple of hours.
the server (iglu.org.il) is now up again, after we opened it in order to
check 2 things:
1. see that the cables are set up properly to all disks (no lose cables).
one of them might have been a bit lose, and we tightened it.
2. there is no free bay in the machine to insert a hard disk. all 4 bottom
bays are filled with the raid's disks, and the bays above them
contain 2 disks, a floppy and a cdrom. however, we might be able to
free the bay occupied by sdb - this disk has less then 2GB space
actually used, and most can be moved to /usr/local (except for the
0.5GB swap partitoin - which will be traumatic to move).
btw, the disks didn't seem to be too hot at all, but we managed to
touch them only after the machine was turned off for about 20 minutes.
we think that since most disk errors come fom disk 'sdc', we might wish to
replace it and see if the problems go away. after some mesisng with the
disks and 'dd', we found disk 'sdc' to be the rightmost amongst the 4
bottom bay disks.
as for adding more disks - the only descent way would probably be to add
another SCSI controller, and an external storage array. there are several
free ISA/PCI slots at the top of the machine (above the mother board
area).
regarding fans - there is no space to place a fan in frant of the disks,
and we don't realy tink heat is the problem anyway.
that's about it for now.
