As I told here earlier Sun Israel (or at least its courses division)
pledged support for IGLU. To interactively enumerate the ways in which Sun
and IGLU can help each other, a meeting was conducted where I represented
IGLU (I was Haim Tzadok's choice) and Haim, his boss Danielle Platt, and
another Sun employee whose name I forgot, were present.
The meeting was constructive and we were able to come with several ways
and measures for which both parties were interested. Note that it was by
no means official, and we'll naturally need to discuss everything that Sun
would like us to do for them, here on this mailing list to see if we find
them reasonable.
Here are some (relatively opinionated) highlights from the meeting:
1. We may actually get a better lecture hall (in Hertzelia Pituakh), but
it's not final, so don't depend on it.
2. Sun wishes that courses pertinent to Linux will be available on the
IGLU web-site. Naturally, they encourage us to publicize all such
Israeli courses, whatever their vendor may be.
3. They mentioned something about links to various development
environments available for Linux. I said there is a problem because our
Links manager is defunct. I might be able to re-create it by installing
the new version of its back-end (from my impression MyThreads-Links was
still actively maintained), if only to make Sun and everybody else
who may need it happier.
4. They said that they have to think of the various ways that were
proposed for them to help us, and let us know of their decision.
5. I received a shirt and a few CDs containing Java software and the
Solaris blue-prints. (I said they were opinionated highlights... ;-))
6. What bothered me a little that they kept looking for ways to push
Solaris using our help. Naturally, I don't think that the GNU/Linux world
is limited to systems running the Linux kernel, but Solaris is proprietary
and behave quite un-GNUishly, at least by default.
I believe most people will not object that in Linux Insta-parties there
would be someone who would be willing to install FreeBSD. However, some
people I know would object to Solaris being demonstrated there, even if
Sun sponsors the event. And this is just an example.
Since the meeting was not official, I believe we should resolve this
issue with Sun, probably here on this mailing list. I myself am not an
Open-Source fanatic, but obviously I cannot decide for the entire IGLU
Cabal.
---
This cooperation will require some work on our part and Sun, but I believe
the Israeli Linuxers can benefit from it.

Shlomi Fish
