I'm trying to sync with carroll.cac.psu.edu. I'm not sure what that means in term of public/private repository.Are you trying to use the public rsyncd or the private rsyncd? You shouldn't get timeouts on either - you'd get a connection denied message due to either too many existing connections for the public rsyncd or insufficient permission to access it for the private rsyncd. What does rsync show you if you add a few '-v's to your rsync command?

The technician syndrom has struck again - the rsync now completes correctly.
If this is the right host to sync with, let's just leave it at that for the time being. Maybe it was some transient problem with our ISP.
