Hi all!

Eskimo is iglu.org.il, a server running several services and web applications.
There are several problems with it:

1. It's relatively old - a Pentium 3 machine with 320 MB of memory. The model
supports up to 1 GB of RAM. I have 4*256 MB memory units for it at home, that
were donated by a Linux-ILer, and can install it. However, the question is
whether we need a new server.

2. The IDE disk that was installed there causes several problems. It often
becomes completely unresponsive. Aside from that there's a 60-70 GB RAID
array on the server, that's so far completely unutilised.

3. We need to define more swap space. We have several old partition that
aren't used and can be backed up to the RAID array or the IDE disk (and a
remote server).

-------------------------

So this message aims to cover the following issues:

1. Do you believe we should buy a new server for Eskimo, and either utilise
the machine for something else (like a Freenode IRC server) or donate it to a
school?

2. I talked with Lior and he mentioned something about moving the web apps to
beak, and the mirrors to mirror.isoc.org.il. However, this will require a
hard disk upgrade for beak. (Which is a good idea anyway you look at it.)

3. I wonder whether Hamakor can pay a symbolic yearly wage for a volunteer
administrator or two to take care of Eskimo and Beak. At the moment, I'm
doing most of the work on Eskimo, and don't get anything to compensate for my
time. I'm happy to do this, but we may get better results if we pay some
money for the volunteers' time.

Regards,

        Shlomi Fish
