Great! I would then start poking around at libxml2, libiconv and related 
libraries -- compare these with a vanilla Mac to see if they are the same 
version and/or check whether Anaconda Python supplies its own version of these 
libraries that might confuse igraph.

python -m igraph.test.__init__ should run all the test cases we have. If they 
pass, there is no need to worry.

Yes, GML is different from GraphML. The only thing you lost is the ability to 
read GraphML files into igraph.
