Not sure on your laptop configuration or video file size. I imported a 45-minute video recording onto a Compaq nx7400 laptop with 1 GB RAM running Debian Lenny, and it took some time to load the frames. It does show the ETA though. Once it loaded, I was able to edit the clips. You could try adding more RAM.
