As far as I understand , google has indexed(or downloaded) most websites
available in  the internet.  When we give a particular word or phrase it
searches thru this index  instead of the whole internet. That is why, it is
able to generate faster results.
                        Have u ever used AvaFind(not open source!) in
Windows? When you start the program the first thing it does it indexes your
entire hard-disk , then when you give the name of a particular file it is
able to return apparopriate results much faster than the "search" program
native to windows. Both work by the same principle of indexing.
