Alok, to add to Sharad's and Robin's suggestions, in case you see the
Windows partition with fdisk, the menu.lst syntax is:
for a partition on /dev/sda2 on my laptop, the corresponding entry is:
title Microsoft Windows XP Professional
root (hd0,1)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

I do not understand this syntax too well, and I haven't taken the
well-known advice: RTFM - `Read The Fine Manual', either.
Ubuntu's default grub configurer missed out one Windows partition for
me, and rendered another one non-bootable. When I tried editing it by
hand, it was status quo once again.
Cheers, Sumantra.
