Check that you have openssh (or is it openssh-server?) installed AND running (system>administration>services). You should have a vnc client on the client side and some implementation of vnc server on the server side? Which one are you using (client/server)? How did you invoke it? Find some tutorial for vnc on Inet for instructions for that but before that, make sure that if ssh server is installed and running, that you are able to connect from remote side. (Unless you are using some firewall software, in which case, which one, there shouldn't be a problem pertaining to "opening ports").
