first of all edit your source.list file located in /etc/apt/
just uncomment few lines, you can see attached source.list file
give the command
sudo apt-get update
for the codecs to be  install give the command in terminal
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
now you can play everything with your default player totem, additionally you
can install vlc and mplayer
sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer

for installing other softwares/packages you can use synaptic package manager
from menu system >> administrator >> synaptic package manager
