If on doing lspci you get something like below in one of the lines:- 01:00.0 Realtek Semiconductor CO. LTD. Unkown device:8136 (rev 01). i.e. unknown device you may need to go for a newer kernel. Do give output of dmesg in a separate file and /etc/network/interfaces + /etc/resolv.conf so that we can understand what's happening in a better manner. Your current description doesn't give much insight. how did you setup when you got this message you posted?
