Hi, For sure K&R is absolute must.Not just for the examples but for teaching the working principles of *nix. But along with it some new nuances have been added with Linux,as K&R has been around 3 to 4 decades.
So pick up any linux distro and install it ( try live cds ). I use openSUSE 11.1 based Li-f-e ( http://tr.im/Get_Life ). Ofcourse I am being partiall here as I have been somehow associated with it. You can see some learning material on www.li-f-e.in as well.
