FOSS @ Tathva is an initiative to use Tathva as a platform to promote Free
and Open Source Software and its philosophy. Tathva over the years has
recorded large participation and so the promotion of free and open source
software in this venue would be very ideal. The long term aim of this event
is to convert this event to an Unconference of the highest standards.
*Engineering
students are one of the largest users and contributor of FOSS. The following
are the events we plan to have in f...@tathva ’09*.

*COMPETITIONS*

» *Tux Of War: *This is an event which began in 2006 as part of
Computer Science Events. The event tests the participant’s skill in Linux
Commands and Shell Scripting. It recorded a participation of about 150 Teams
(of 2 participants) in Tathva ’08.

» *Open Software Submission: *This event is being introduced this year
in Tathva ’09. Being a no strings attached event, the participant can
develop any software and exhibit it as long as it is Free and Open Source.
They are also allowed to develop patches for particular software. We will be
getting external judges to value the softwares and also the participants of
Tathva itself to rate the softwares.

*WORKSHOPS*

» *Beagle Board Workshop: *The BeagleBoard is a low-power, low-cost
Single-board computer produced by in association with Digi-Key, designed
with open source development in mind, to demonstrate the Texas Instrument's
OMAP3530 system-on-a-chip. It is open-source and there exists a large
community of users who work together to solve problems and come up with
innovative solutions. The workshop is being handled by Syed Mohammed Khasim
works for Texas Instruments, India Bangalore. He is a core member of the
beagleboard.org initiative. Khasim has contributed 160 patches to Linux OMAP
GIT and contributed 10 patches to Kernel.org (160 to come in). He is listed
as a maintainer in 2.6_kernel/MAINTAINERS.

» *User 2 Hacker:* This is a workshop which will introduce ordinary
Linux users how to contribute to the ever growing society of FOSS by
building their own softwares and patches. It will introduce the participants
to the various tools available to them and also about what all they should
keep in mind when developing the software.

*OTHER EVENTS*

» *FOSS Hut: *FOSS Hut will be the place to be for the FOSS
enthusiasts during Tathva. It will exhibit the FOSS alternatives to
proprietary softwares, especially the ones that would be used by engineers.
There would also be informal talks and sessions. It would also serve as the
Unconference Venue. The persons can also get the exhibited softwares
installed on their system on that spot itself or burn it to a disc and take
it along with them.

» *Mapping Party:* We are also organizing a mapping party to map NITC
and contribute to the Open Street Map Project. This is the first of the kind
mapping party in Kerala and one of the first ones in India itself. A team of
about 50 will be running around and mapping the whole campus of about 290
acres within 2 days. We have already got very good responses for this event
and we have GeoHackers (pronounced as Geokers) as the resource partners for
the same. This event is sure going to be fun and will burn some
calories. Please visit the Mapping Party WIki
here<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/NITC_mapping_party>

» *Unconference:* No FOSS Meet is complete without an unconference,
here we have the FOSS enthusiasts from in and around Kerala to come and
participate not to give and take, but to share their knowledge with
everybody.

Visit our site www.tathva.org for full information on all of the events.
Please do register online and go through all the other events, we also have
many exciting events from other disciplines of engineering also.
