Which ubuntu version are you using?

Maybe you can get help at launchpad.net. OR try the mailing list at the
Mumbai/Chennai/Pune LUGs. Seems to be that some file has been locked. That
file may have to be manually deleted or something like that.

Have you used the safe version (single user mode) when booting grub?
Or
Have you tried an earlier kernel while booting from grub?

The problem also could be due to electrical faults/tripping etc or hardware
-memory etc. Generally hardware of old computers starts failing sometimes
due to a malfunctioning power supply.

Troubleshooting will have to be done step by step to eliminate likely cause
of the problem.
