IMO, you will need contacts in companies whom you can approach for the
same. That is what I meant by "visibility" across a wider spectrum.

If there are alumni from your respective colleges, who are working in
companies (using F/OSS), please contact them as well.

But, one can also approach F/OSS projects directly in their mailing
list for possible internship work (for the experience, and not just
for monetary benefits alone), and most team members (depending on
time) will respond.
