If the support is not there yet, why dont you sit down to understand the
differences between ext3 and ext4 filesystems-- and take a shot at adding
ext4 support to the ext2/ext3 fs driver ?

I knew someone (sm out of touch with this person now) who many years back
contributed to ext2fs-- and he used to claim that once you sit down to do
it; it is a doable task.

Just a thought-- but why not ?
