sorry, to say, but joomla is for everything ,from blog to a
community(social networking) .
Though elgg is good , but there are not much extensions available in
elgg and specially open source and free unless you develop your own
extension .

But since, i been working on joomla for a significantly long time, i
can say, on the basis of large JED(joomla extension directory) ,there
is no CMS which can stand against joomla in any field even in social
networking.
