I'm not sure how it works on Linux, but I've used ffmpeg binaries on
Windows. ffmpeg libraries are shipped with most Linux distros, so you
should be able to use them.

As a side note, can you play .mp3 files which haven't been converted?
If not, the problem might be in your audio codecs rather than the
conversion method.
